On June 20th, we visited Thessaloniki for a special collaboration with the Thessaloniki Tenants’ Union. Together, we presented the set “The fight for home”, which was curated for and screened at PDSFF25, in Athens.
The screening was followed by a discussion focused on the challenges faced by renters in Thessaloniki and in Greece. Audience members and organisers compared the realities depicted in the films with their own experiences, raising concerns about the future of housing and emphasising the urgent need for collective action.
The fight for home (105’)
Struggles against the violence of gentrification, dispossession and uprooting. Claiming the right to land beyond the logic of ownership and appropriation.
Losing your home, dir. Emmanuel Rioux (Canada, 19:21’)
Too many stories can tell the horrible consequences of the housing crisis. Those of Jeannette and Frances make us feel the difficult experience of eviction. Amidst anguish, brief hopes and uprooting, Jeannette and Frances struggle, alone and surrounded, against a phenomenon that is becoming more and more pronounced: losing your home.
Mango, dir. Randa Ali (Egypt, 22:40’)
During a hot August in Cairo, Nadia struggles to mourn her estranged father and his mango tree.
Orange, dir. Nóra Horváth (Romania, 15’)
Orange is a witchy old woman. She makes medicine from herbs helping the villagers with them. The silence of her hut and her herb-scented life are disturbed by the owner of the field.
When the land runs away, dir. Frederico Lobo (Portugal, 29:06’)
Amid the fog and the labyrinth of time, while machines probe the geological depths of the mountain, a shepherd searches for an errant cow. Childhood finds its way back, the mountain transforms itself, the cycle continues.
The Tooth And The Rock, dir. Kostis Alevizos (Greece, 19:19’)
Margarita and her father, returning to Pylos, they will be confronted with the rapid tourist transformation of the place. Margarita will become the cause for those old friends of his to mingle again and claim a spot, in the shade of the plane tree, taken over by tourists.
Stay tuned for the next stop!
